In a symbolic move for the Obama Administration’s dedication in supporting the LGBT community, they have announced that they have opened a gender-neutral bathroom within the White House compound. This “all-gender” restroom is located in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, next door to the White House complex, where many of the White House employees have offices and meetings.
The staff and their guests can use these restrooms consistent with their gender identity. This move is in keeping with the Obama Administration’s to support the LGBT community. It is also signing an executive order banning discrimination based on their gender orientation within the Federal government and government contractors.
This is a historic move by the Federal Government in supporting the transgender and cross-dressing community. It will set a precedent for the States, who currently are not mandated to offer gender-neutral bathrooms. Each state will have to deal with this ever-important issue independently. Yet, this move by the Federal government offers a sign that that the U.S. is becoming more tolerant and accepting of the transgender and cross-dressing community.
The U.S. government has a large number of transgender workers as this has grown since the Clinton Administration. As the need for reform in supporting this community is critical; this is a monumental step in the right direction.
