August Events for Families at the Morton Arboretum
Celebrate summer this August at The Morton Arboretum. This natural oasis is on our summer list every year. There is truly something for everyone (seriously -- you won't believe how many fun things there are to do here). Head outside for exciting performances of James and the Giant Peach or listen to live music at Thursday Family Nights. Or come see how beautifully crafted objects are created from a piece of wood, during a free woodturning demonstration. For the latest updates on events and classes, visit mortonarb.org. Here are some upcoming programming highlights: FOR FAMILIES James and the Giant Peach presented by Theatre-Hikes® Join us weekends in August at 1 p.m. for James and the Giant Peach. The audience will walk along with the action, moving through the Arboretum grounds while watching James as he takes us on the journey from discovering a giant peach in his aunt’s yard to arriving here in the United States. Each performance lasts approximately two hours and 30 minutes, so please wear comfortable shoes, dress for the weather, and bring a chair or blanket, water bottle, and insect repellent. The Sunday, August 4 performance will be a low-impact hike (suitable for strollers, walkers and wheelchairs). Cost: $12 member adult, $19 nonmember adult, $8 member child, $13 nonmember child including admission. Season passes are available. Tickets available at mortonarb.org, in the Visitor Center or by calling 630-725-2066. Hooked on Fishing Spend the morning fishing the Arboretum's Lake Marmo. This 25-foot deep lake contains a wide variety of fish including bluegills and bass. From the banks, catch and release fish, big and small, as you learn about the fish living in the lake and how they are perfectly adapted for a life in the water. Join us from 7 to 10 a.m. on Sunday, August 11.  For families with children ages 6 and up. Cost: $10 member, $17 nonmember per person including admission. Register at mortonarb.org/education, in the Visitor Center or by calling 630-719-5768. Thursday Family Nights Thursday nights are family nights at the Arboretum, with extended hours, snacks and musical entertainment for the whole clan. On August 1, 8 and 15, from 5 to 8 p.m., enjoy together-time on the beautiful grounds of the Arboretum. Explore the Children's Garden, navigate the Maze Garden and bop to the beat of groovy tunes. Be sure to check out Tree House Tales, where you can enter a magical tree village that's filled with adventure and imagination and David Rogers' Big Bugs where you'll stare in amazement at 10 larger-than-life insect sculptures. Free with admission. Nonmember special: $5 admission per person after 4:30 p.m. on Thursday Family Nights evenings (as always, admission is free for children under 2). Musical lineup: August 1:       Zak Morgan August 8:       Duke Otherwise August 15:      Little Nashville Family Twilight Adventures Join in a fun-filled adventure after hours at the Arboretum. Hike, do activities and roast marshmallows before going on a silent tram ride through the woods after dark. Come and see what animals come out when people go home! Join us Saturday, August 3 from 6 to 8 p.m. or Friday, August 9 from 7 to 9 p.m. Children must be accompanied by adult registrant; please, plan to have at least one adult per five children and dress for the weather. Family Campout Adventure Pitch your tent at the Arboretum and enjoy hands-on activities, night hikes and bedtime stories with your family. Join us from 6:30 p.m. to 9 a.m. on Friday, August 2 to Saturday, August 3 (best suited for families with children ages 5-10). Cost: $30 member, $37 nonmember per person including admission. Family Explorer Backpack Grab a Family Explorer Backpack and embark on an educational adventure through the Children's Garden. Choose between Sensory or Discover Backpacks filled with science tools, guides and fun props for families with children ages 2-6. Backpacks are available daily through October, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Children’s Garden. Cost: $4 member, $5 nonmember per backpack plus admission. Backpacks are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Purchase tickets at the Visitor Center Information Desk. Acorn Express Adventures Hop aboard the Acorn Express, our open-air tram, as we seek out fun destinations and make a craft each week. WTTW Hosts 10th Annual WTTW Kids Fun and Run
Walk or run, but come to the 10th annual WTTW Kids Fun and Run! Registration for this annual family event is now open!  This spectacular event for parents and children supports WTTW’s award-winning and educational children’s programming and will take place in Chicago’s Lincoln Park on Sunday, August 25 from 9:00 am until noon.  This year’s celebration will feature live music from Ralph's World performing their critically-acclaimed, totally enjoyable music for adults and kids alike. Favorite WTTW walk-around characters will be on hand for hugs and photographs, including Sesame Street’s Elmo, Grover, and Cookie Monster; Arthur, D.W. and Buster from Arthur; WordGirl; Ruff Ruffman from Fetch; Peep from Peep and the Big Wide World; Martha from Martha Says; Dr. Seuss’s the Cat in the Hat; and longtime children’s favorite, Curious George. Other attractions include complimentary food and beverage, strolling entertainment, children’s performers from the Old Town School of Folk Music, giant inflatables for climbing and sliding, activities and crafts, and live performances from Miss Lori of Miss Lori’s CAMPUS. This event will sell out. Advance registration is required and early registration is strongly recommended. The general entry fee is $30 per person for adults and $15 for children age 13 and under; for WTTW11 members, the entry fee is $20 per person for adults and $10 for children age 13 and under. All registered participants will receive an official WTTW Kids Fun and Run t-shirt, runner/walker number and goodie bag. Children 24 months old and younger on the day of the event are admitted free, but will not receive a T-shirt, runner/walker number or goodie bag unless registered as paid participants...
