Welcome to School Zone: The World of Education from A to Z!

Cuts affecting my children's education have created my desire to improve opportunities in my community and caused me to examine the changes occurring in my town and across the nation. I have been a volunteer in my children's clasrooms for several years and brought parent-led art programs to all the schools in my district. I served as co-president of our PTO and through that position was able to rennovate our school's computer lab which housed equipment so old it was seldom used. While co-president, I initiated the school's first Science Fair and revived Family Reading Night. Besides the usual focus on fundraising, yearbook, dances, and fun fairs..our board helped teachers gain access to technology through the purchase of document cameras.

Recently, I put my Masters of Arts in teaching degree back to use as a reading intervention tutor. As my activism has grown, I gained another perspective on education that I hadn't known as a former third grade teacher. The opportunity to participate in Parenting's Mom Congress has broaden my views on education. I have written for Chicago Parent and published lesson plans for teachers to accompany children's books. Previous to teaching I worked as an editor in an educational publishing company.

I live with my family on the Fox River where we enjoy boating and campfires in the backyard. I have three wonderful children who keep me very busy and involved in their schools.
