Springsteen, Bon Jovi, Christina Aguilera, & Jon Stewart Raising Funds for Sandy Victims Tonight on NBC

My daughter and I watched the pictures from the disaster that hurricane Sandy left behind on our nation’s east coast on the news last night. In New York, people were looking in dumpsters for food thrown out by restaurants in order to have something to eat.  People are without power, heat and potable water. After listening to the stories from New Jersey about businesses and homes swept away, my daughter asked if “we could drive there and help out?”  While that isn’t possible for us, we can do something from here in Chicagoland to help.

Tonight NBC will be broadcasting a telethon, Hurricane Sandy: Coming Together, airing live from Rockefeller Center.  Performers signed on to appear include: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Billy Joel, Jon Bon Jovi, Sting, Mary J. Blige, Christina Aguilera, Kevin Bacon, James Gandolfini, Jon Stewart, Tina Fey, Jimmy Fallon and news anchor Brian Williams. The telethon can also be viewed on USA Network, SyFy, MSNBC, CNBC, Bravo, E!, Style Network, G4 and others.  You can livestream it on NBC.com.  Apparently the telethon was the idea of Matt Lauer, co-host of the Today show who approached the CEO of NBC Universal with the plan.  Many of the celebrities participating have their roots in New York and New Jersey.

While the NBC hosts a telethon, locally this is an opportunity for school PTOs, PTAs, service clubs, and student councils to pitch in by collecting change or other donations for hurricane victims.  Children can include handmade cards or letters of hope and encouragement.
