How Your Shopping This Weekend Can Support the Best Teachers in Illinois

Love to shop until you drop? Need some back-to-school clothes for the kids? How about something new for your home? Getting a jump on…dare I say it…holiday shopping? (Oh no, I said it)

By shopping this weekend at Macy’s, you can support some of Illinois’s most outstanding educators- Golden Apple teachers! Golden Apple is a non-profit organization with the mission to inspire, develop, and support teacher excellence in Illinois. They recognize superior teachers as well as provide exceptional preparation for future teachers through their Golden Apple Scholars program.

This cause is very near and dear to me because my mother was a Golden Apple award winner in the early 90s. That is her in the middle of the back row in the sky blue dress.

1991 Golden Apple Award Winners

Since 1986, the Golden Apple Foundation has recognized 10 outstanding teachers each year in the Chicago area thereby promoting teaching excellence. It was an exciting night for the family as my sister, brother, husband and I accompanied my mother to the studios of WTTW/Channel 11 for the awards program.

It was an “Academy Awards” of teaching, as everyone was in black-tie and formal wear with the city’s education, business, and civic leaders in attendance. Each teacher’s story and accomplishments were highlighted and all were presented with awards.

This year the Golden Apple Foundation is teaming up with Macy’s to help fund its mission. For several years, Macy’s has been hosting a charitable event for non-profit groups called “Shop for a Cause”. On Saturday, August 25, 2012, Macy’s will host its 7th annual Shop For A Cause, supporting charities nationwide.

Locally, you can directly benefit Golden Apple Foundation and its programs by purchasing tickets to use while shopping.

Golden Apple Foundation is trying to reach a goal of 400 shoppers! All donations are greatly appreciated so be sure to tell your family and friends. Not a shopper? You can still make a donation to Golden Apple Foundation by visiting their website.

Here are some of the teachers selected this year as 2012 Golden Apple award recipients for excellence in teaching as covered by ABC/Channel 7 recently.

Do you know any fantastic teachers or administrators that we should feature on School Zone? What makes them outstanding? Let me know, I would love to tell their story! Perhaps they should be nominated for a Golden Apple award? Feel free to comment, tweet, share, or contact me at
