Tinnitus Can Be Treated

Tinnitus or unwanted ear noises is a phenomenon that millions of people experience. If you have been told that you can't be helped, don't believe it. Tinnitus can be treated.

Hearing noises in your ears 24 hours a day can be quite stressful. Many of us learn to ignore our tinnitus, but for some of us, it can have a devastating impact on daily activities, concentrating or sleeping. Tinnitus is unique for each of us and treatment can be personalized.

Finding a sound that "masks" or lessens the annoying sound that only you can hear is most often an effective therapy. It sounds crazy, but most of the time covering up tinnitus with a different sound works quite well.

This afternoon I spoke with a young family member who recently retired from military service. Like many veterans who have served our country, he returned with hearing loss and tinnitus. He was treated earlier this year and is thrilled with the results. By virtue of a soft masking noise and his iPhone, he can easily eliminate his tinnitus on demand. I loved hearing how treating tinnitus changed his life.

A number of health conditions can be related to the onset of tinnitus, but most commonly, tinnitus is associated with exposure to loud sounds and age related hearing loss. Some forms of tinnitus can not be prevented but there are three things you can do. First, always use ear protection when exposure to loud sounds can not be avoided. Second, keep the volume at safe listening levels and the last bit of advice is to take care of yourself. Eat a healthy diet, exercise and make good lifestyle choices to keep your heart healthy.

If you or someone you know has tinnitus and has never been evaluated by an Audiologist, help is here. We're waiting to meet you.
