According to AFP News Service article today, IOC Chief Thomas Bach acknowledges that Guanabara Bay is bad. Alas, he takes no position and continues to accept promises from the Rio Organizing Committee that the venue will work. Yahoo! Sports Article
- The International Olympic Committee is now on record accepting the conditions of Guanabara Bay and the continued promises of the Rio Organizing Committee who has failed on the vast majority of promises to clean the bay.
- The International Sailing Federation (ISAF) has only sent a silk kite over the bow of the Rio Organizing Committee a few months ago saying that they are thinking about getting their dander up. It is ISAF's decision to stay or leave Guanabara Bay.
- The Rio Organizing Committee has said that they have no "Plan B" while published reports have said other sites have been considered. They have remained steadfast that sailing will remain in Rio, but must take orders from ISAF on where sailing will be sailed.
- Some Olympic sailors have called for the venue to move out of Guanabara Bay.
That's the current score card. Obviously none of the officials involved have ever heard the saying, "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me." The Rio Organizing Committee has made promise after promise after promise, with most never happening. The bay continues to be sewage filled, and the trash has been reduced a slight amount, but still a horrible amount flowing through Guanabara Bay ending up in the ocean's waters.
The Aquece Test Event August 13 - 22, 2015 brings all Olympic Sailing Classes together with Olympic Hopefuls competing. There are no other Test Events before the Olympic Games open. It is make or break, if the venue cannot provide a competition now, no one can believe the Rio Organizing Committee that it will be any better at the Olympic Games and must abandon Guanabara Bay immediately.
