Summer Fun - Junior Sailing Schools, Version 2.0

Summer Fun - Junior Sailing Schools, Version 2.0

School is just about out, and what will your children do this summer?  How about a camp like experience that teaches sailing?  Do you take a vacation somewhere around Lake Michigan and would like to keep your kids active each day?  Are they going to the grandparents for a stay, and you would like them to split their time doing something else than hanging at the grandparents house?  A lot of parents enroll their kids in Sailing School.

All kids are required to wear life jackets full time around the water for safety.  Small boats are provided, your child needs minimal gear – hat, sunscreen, gloves, life jacket, and a few more.  What a great way to go sailing vicariously through your children!  They’ll take turns being in command of their own sailboat.

While sailing is for everyone, studies by Brendan Sailing have shown that with all of the variables, stimulus, and input (waves, shifting wind, heel, seagull flying by, etc.), sailing is one of the best sports for kids with ADHD or ADD.  It builds confidence, it allows kids to show off a skill to their parents they learned on their own.

I went to sailing school as a child, and am still at it 40 years later.  I also sail with my father who is in his 80's.  It becomes a life long sport, that motivates you to stay in shape for a lifetime.  This is an endeavor worth living.  We are learning right now that it is critical that the junior sailor get aboard Adult Sailboats while engaging in sailing school, high school and collegiate sailing.  Make sure the sailing school you choose works to partner the junior sailor with adult sailing boats each year.  The Wawasee video at the bottom is a fine example, with the kids out on a 40' Scow (the biggest Scow class there is).

One impression I hope everyone gets is how big sailing is.  You don't have to travel far to find a sailing school for your children.  The amazing thing is that they fill quickly.  Some classes are sold out, and it is only March when I am writing this.

Here’s a good video that covers the basics of most sailing schools –

The purpose of this blog is to break the myth that sailing is exclusive and expensive. Again, I have succeeded to explain where the doors are wide open and how to introduce sailing in the hundreds of dollars. Where is the welcome mat out?   Check out all of these Junior Sailing Schools in the Lake Michigan region and join in the fun -
