Info for New Sailors @ Strictly Sail Chicago Boat Show, January 23-26, 2014 @ Navy Pier - Part 2

While the Seminars in the rooms in the upper level of Navy Pier described in Part 1 of this series are an excellent place for new sailors to learn, there are some things on the show floor that are worthy to visit as well for someone starting out.  Primary, they are the sailing schools whose doors are wide open, accessible, extremely affordable and get you started out in your sailing journey with quick knowledge that will take years to get going other routes in your journey.

You took Driver's Ed classes to learn to drive a car, and taking a learn to sail course only makes sense.

Ignore the dates in this video - it was filmed in 2012!

Took a Sailing Course & Later Bought a Sailboat!

The Trade booths on the floor are there to sell lots of merchandise, including boats, but for someone starting out, buying most of the products are needed later on after you go through a sailing school and learn the ropes (a cliche' that fits!).  Some of those booths are valuable for you to visit.

There are two organizations that certify sailing schools.  It is voluntary, not mandatory for schools to get certified.  Those schools who are certified are adamant that their schools are better than those who aren't, that they not only have a standardized curriculum, but by sharing, they have training how to help overcome people's fears of the water, seasickness, or other concerns.  In my experience I find that  about 1/3 are certified by ASA, 1/3 are certified by US Sailing, and 1/3 are GDI's (Gol' Darn Independents).  Caveat emptor.

Some of these sailing schools cater to adults, others to youth, and others do both.  So here's a list of sailing schools and charter companies on the floor of the show, that would be good places for newcomers to start:
