Recently I wrote an article for a periodical on not-for-profit corporations on how the IRS limits income from non-members to 15% of their annual revenue. While this seems like an odd topic for sailing, it explains why “Members Only” at yacht club’s has to be enforced. It doesn't take much for guests to spend on food, beverage, and clothing bursting the 15% limit. It really doesn't have anything to do with "class wars", or being snooty, though a few pretenders play that angle, the vast majority of sailors want more sailors and new friends at their clubs and the only way to do it is to convert a non-member into a member. However, some yacht clubs arrange to give back to the community and introduce you to sailing with open houses.
