When it's "just surviving the holidays"

When it's "just surviving the holidays"
Chris Sweda, Chicago Tribune.

When it's "just surviving the holidays"
old memories seep up your arm
the limbic system tries to warn
though it's over and gone
your body remembers the old ways.

When it's "just surviving the holidays"
shivers down your spine
backward goes the time
it's never a good sign
when you revert to survival ways

When it's "just surviving the holidays"
body aching, limbs all in pain
Like the clouds, the eyes rain
Eat all the food, you deign
It's how you survive each day.

When it's "just surviving the holidays"
Small gestures, God, what did that mean?
Happy? Sad? Are you failing?
No end to this journey seen
How can you survive the night and days?

When it's "just surviving the holidays"
Walking along, eggshells cracking
Little stresses send you snapping
Apologies, guilt, shame, napping
Just keep on plugging away.

If you are "just surviving the holidays"
Know your worth, those days are past
Think of peace, not his wrath
As hard as that is to surpass
You can survive the holidays.
