I attempted to do a 2-hour long run on Friday, but ended up having to quit after 40 minutes because my left calf was really tight that it was painful. I tried pausing several times to stretch it out, but to no avail.
I must admit, I probably got myself into this problem by not stretching enough. It's so easy to disregard stretching for the sake of saving a few minutes, but if it causes me to have to abridge my training...well, a few minutes of prevention is worth an hour of running.
The best stretch I've found for it is the stair stretch. I don't have stairs at home--okay, well, I do in the fire escape, but I really don't want to hang out in the stairwell because it freaks me out for some reason. So, I stretch using stairs at work.
Here's a pretty good description of the stair stretch here.
Yesterday, I was able to avail myself of this stretch, and wow, I hadn't realized how tight my calves actually were. I knew they were tight because they caused pain, but geez, even a slight stretch was powerful.
I'm going to keep stretching today, and then hopefully I can run for an hour after work. Perhaps an hour and a half, but it depends on how hungry I am.
