It seems that there are more Afro American churches that support this administration because of its “pro-Christian” platform than I would’ve liked to assume. Some of the discussions I’ve had with congregants of these institutions based on this is very disturbing to say the least. Now by all means this is America and your vote or choice is your own to use as you see fit and I’m good with that because your right to choose is tied to mine. That being said the trouble I’m having here is with the poison that’s being infiltrated into the gospel and disseminated into our community causing behavior that’s counterproductive to our best interests.
In one of the conversations I’ve had with someone very close to me who has never really expressed any real interest or concern for what goes on and why in our community , I was talking about Facebook and my confusion about why so many of us are still on the platform in light of the fact they allowed our adversaries to use our information to construct campaigns to deceive us and suppress our vote, not that I’m a huge supporter of the vote under status quo black leadership, but before I could finish my thought he immediately suggested he knew where I was going with this and asked what has Obama done for black people and he went on to optimistically defend Trump. I was shocked. Not that he supported him, I already knew that. I was shocked that he used the interest of Afro Americans as a talking point to do it. Once he calmed a bit I reminded him that I’m in no way a fan of or a cheerleader for the Obama administration as it concerns the interests of our community and that he knew that. But I was reminded at that point of a conversation we had on the run-up to the election about why he supported Trump and it was all based on the “pro-Christian” platform.
Many faith based Afro Americans actually believe that God called and ordained Trump to “restore” this country back to its Christian values. His move to acknowledge Jerusalem as the capital of Israel was a key victory for them on that front. It seemed to have solidified that support. But no president especially this one can restore what was never really there. At the constitutional convention in 1787 George Mason was quoted as saying, “Every master of slaves is born a petty tyrant. [Slaves] bring the judgment of heaven on a Country. As nations cannot be rewarded or punished in the next world they must be in this. By an inevitable chain of causes & effects providence punishes national sins, by national calamity...” Mason himself was then and remained a slave owner.
America has always had a form of Godliness but in spite of the best efforts of the few true men and women of God we have always fallen short of that standard. Nevertheless here we are watching the faith based community pinning all its hopes and dreams on the most amoral of men and cherry picking select scriptures to suggest divinity where there is none. Truth be told the state of America and the Trump presidency is a direct indictment of the hypocrisy of the faith based community. Let’s be honest with one another. In the name of Christianity we’ve justified slavery, oppression, suppression, murder, torture, racism, biological warfare, stealing, cheating, etc. and I’m not even talking about what we witnessed our government do in and to other countries. I’m talking about what we’ve witnessed, co-signed, participated in and had done to other Americans right here in this country. We’ve witnessed our pastors, politicians and respected business men lay down the suit and collar to put on white sheets and hoods to burn crosses on the lands of groups we hate. Yes I said hate. In the name of Christianity we’ve justified hatred. The current state of decadence in America is what happens to a society when it’s spiritual base trades righteousness for self righteousness.
I can accept the belief coming from President Trumps Afro American supporters in the faith based community that God chose Trump for president specifically for this time in America’s history. I would only differ in why he chose him for this hour. Matthew 12:29 reads, “Or else how can one enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house.” I would advise you take a good hard look at what POTUS is doing here in and to America. He’s capitalizing on and exploiting the lack of public trust in government and media, weakening institutions that we depend on for defense, alienating allies, starting trade wars, embracing enemies, stirring up racial animosities, and furthering the divide between rich and poor. Taken together this all amounts to the equivalent of “binding the strong man” don’t you think? If you were an enemy of this country, wouldn’t this be the most opportune time to launch an attack? Not necessarily a military one but maybe something a little more subtle like the hacking of sensitive materials and utilities, campaign interference, and a propaganda campaign. Yes I believe Trump was ordained for such a time as this but not for the glorious future the faith based community envisions here. Consider the words of George Mason while you chew on that little nugget.
To be sure it’s a fine line to walk to align oneself with the cross and yet its so easy to be distracted and lose your way only to wake up one day to find yourself on the wrong side of the cross. We believe that the gospel of Christ is the gospel of peace. Not the peace that results from compromising with unrighteousness but the peace that comes from the full embrace of righteousness.
You can’t bet the farm on a one dimensional issue in a multi dimensional world and claim victory. If the community of which you’re a part is oppressed, suppressed, or distressed its in no way Christ like to ignore it to focus on a place thousands of miles away. You can’t step over the dead body at your front door to run to Jerusalem’s rescue because it’s the “christian” thing to do. Remember that we’ve been on the receiving end of the “christian” thing in America and its not always the CHRIST like thing. Take care with whom you align yourself before you find yourself on the wrong side of the cross.
