Have you been to Hump Fest???
If not, what are you waiting for?
This past Friday, I had the pleasure of attending the Very Best Of Hump 2008-2017 tour on it's Chicago stop at the lovely Music Box Theater.
Now, if you haven't heard of Hump Fest, you've been missing out. Hump Fest is the brain child of syndicated sex/love advice columnist Dan Savage. Now, I'm a big Dan Savage fan. I started reading his column, Savage Love, in the Chicago Reader weekly. From there, I began listening to The Savage Lovecast, his weekly podcast. I enjoy listening to Dan's open and honest discourse about sex.
I'm an adult. I have no problem admitting that I like sex. I like talking about it, thinking about it, hearing about it, and yes, watching it. I know that the porn industry has a lot of issues. I try to be very conscious of the porn I watch, and who it is made by. I generally tend to watch a lot of amateur or female directed porn. Certainly not exclusively, but yeah. Sex is healthy. We do it for fun. I am always perplexed at the big deal, people's big hangups, with sex. Much like Barney Stinson, if I had a porn collection (I don't, I am a purely digital consumer) It would be shelved and have it's own lighting.
This country needs more sex positivity, and more open, honest discussions about sex and sexuality. Sex is fun..why shouldn't we be talking about it?
Hump Fest celebrates this sex positive ideology in grand fashion, as an amateur pornography film festival, but this isn't your average Pornhub fare.
Hump Films, as Dan Savage often says, aren't made by pornstars, but by people who want to be a pornstar for the weekend. While not all Hump Films are made specifically for Hump, most of them stay exclusive to Hump and aren't available for public consumption outside of the festival. Each year, a small collection of items are picked that filmmakers can use to include in their films, letting the audience know the film was made specifically for Hump. These items can range from accordions, to Mike Huckabee's autobiography. (Yes, really!)
The type of porn included in the festival runs the entire gamut of possiblity: heterosexual, homosexual, transexual, and every variant in between. Some of the films are amazingly funny, some more serious, some seriously erotic, some pretty hardcore, and some have no actual sex at all in them. The variety of films, as well as not really knowing what you're going to see are what adds to the excitement to a night of Hump...as well as watching porn on a big screen with a roomful of strangers.
This particular tour brought a group of fan favorites films, 22 to be exact, back for an appreciative audience.
I wasn't disappointed one little bit by the selection of films, and was very happy to see a few that I'd missed in the early years of Hump! One that immediately comes to mind is a film from 2008 entitled "Butthole Lickin’" As described in the liner notes:
To kiss or not to kiss? That is the question two women must explore after one rims the other. Lesbian processing has never looked so good.
I can tell you, the film was hilarious, and was actually the first film of the evening, starting things off on an amazing note. I was also overjoyed that one of my favorite Hump films was included in the selection, from 2015, The Collector. Now, lucky for all of you, this film is actually available for public viewing outside of Hump See this one for yourself. It DOES NOT have sex in it, but I'm still not quite sure it is SFW. :-/ This one was also voted "Best Humor" at the 2015 festival.
So now that you know about Hump, you will have an opportunity to get out and have your own Hump experience fairly soon. While tickets are not for sale yet, we were told on Friday that the new season of Hump will be returning to Chicago in April. Even better, there is already a trailer for the newest season!
Don't be afraid. Even I was a little tentative at my first Hump experience, but once you're settle into your seat with a drink and some popcorn, it's not much different than any other movie experience...just way more SEX!!!!!!
I'd love to hear from all of you below. Have you been to Hump? Are you thinking about going? Do you know of any other festivals similar? Give me all the thoughts and 411 below!!!
