I’ve never self identified as a Democrat, however I voted yesterday; A straight Democratic ticket. The Republican Party has demonstrated itself wholly unaccepting of who I am as a person, and have embraced characters I perceive as vile, and threatening to so many people I care about.
I have significant people in my life who are immigrants, gays, black, female, trans, Muslim, and all ends of the spectrum of life. I will never leverage my love and connections to them to bridge some chasm of political thought. There is no middle ground on these issues in my mind. Hate and vitriol is wrong. Oppression is wrong. Inequity of opportunity is wrong. Racism and sexism are wrong. Bullying is wrong.
I have no illusions about the perfection of the Democratic Party. It’s a flawed tribe in a deeply flawed system. However, in my lifetime, they have never cozied up to white nationalists for votes. They have not tried to rub out trans citizens. They’ve never sent thousands of troops to the southern border to rebuff refugees, nor have they suggested building a wall. They’ve never cozied up to Breitbart or Alex Jones, nor have they ever kowtowed to the NRA.
The Republican Party has done all of that.
While you may feel comfortable in the bosom of people who repudiate you, if not in word then certainly in action, more power to you. I can’t imagine what I would say to my Muslim or LGBTQ+ friends after chumming up to President Trump.
Of course we need thoughtful, measured conversation to find consensus, and to understand perspectives, but that certainly wouldn’t consist of me singing the praises of the President, or shucking and jiving in front of cameras.
We also need research. The Republican Party says they’re not allergic to research. Well, I challenge them as a party to make a call for federally funded research on gun violence. Maybe you can talk to your buddy Don, and ask him to speak to Mitch, and get that done? If you care at least an iota about Chicago, you can do us that solid.
Maybe then you'd get some applause from me. Maybe then they’d get applause from me. Maybe then they’d get a vote from me. Maybe.
Hell, you accomplish that little task, and I'll spend a week wearing head to toe Blexit gear.
But, as long as The Republican Party paints me and my friends as enemies, then adversaries we shall be.
We're from the same place, you and I. We even went to the same high school. I've been a fan of yours. I hate to view you as an enemy. I wish I could quote Abraham Lincoln in saying,
“We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory will swell when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.”
But I'm not feeling very angelic right now, and you and Trump don't look very friendly. More honestly, I'd like to tell you to shove your Blexit. Yeah, that feels more honest. Perhaps we can try the friend thing on November 7th.
