There is nothing like standing in the presence of greatness.
Now, I'm no great blues aficionado. I honestly wish I knew more about blues than I do, but even if the simple name doesn't precede him, it only takes about 5 seconds on guitar for you to recognize the greatness of Buddy Guy! The man shines like gold.
Last night I had the opportunity to attend the kick-off night of Buddy Guy's January residency at his club, Buddy Guy's Legends. If you've never been there, I recommend you go. In face, there are 15 more nights, including tonight, in this residency. I made it a point when purchasing tickets to go the night in which the opener would be 2017 Grammy Award winner and longtime friend of Buddy's, Bobby Rush. In addition to amazing entertainment, there was a special fundraiser to raise money for PCa Blue, which works to raise awareness about prostate cancer while helping save lives through research.
I couldn't have imagined a better evening. I warn you...the place is small, and seating fills up quick. If you don't get there early, you will either be standing, or sitting upstairs, which is what my friend Kim and I did for Bobby Rush. They have a video screen and sound system upstairs, so you can see the show. However, we made our way downstairs to see Buddy in-person, which was assholes to elbows his entire set.
But man...it was amazing. The best part, aside from the music, is when Buddy takes a moment and talks about the history of blues music...how lucky he is to be making, and have made money from music when his predecessors and mentors, the men who taught him how to play, made virtually nothing at all, and in many cases were ignored until validated by someone else, as in the case of Muddy Waters, whom he specifically talked about last night.
So, I encourage you to check out Buddy Guy's Legends. I also recommend the baby back ribs, and for a good cocktail the Orange Whip!
And before you head towards the door, be sure to sing the blues at least once. It's not mandatory, but it's the right thing to do.
Also, a shout out to Kimberly Hansen for contributing some pictures to this gallery. Much appreciated madam!
