Welcome to The Red Light District, my Blackhawks and NHL blog. My name is Jay Zawaski, and the main purpose of this little blog is to give you the best of both worlds when it comes to Chicago Blackhawks Hockey.
I'm just a fan and have been my whole life. I grew up going to Hawks games with my dad and my uncles at the old Stadium, and fell in love the first time I heard that pipe organ shake the rafters.
To say I've been hooked since then would be an understatement. While many Hawks fans were (rightfully) abandoning ship, there I was in my Steve Poapst sweater, just convinced that guys like Tyler Arnason, Mark Bell and Kyle Calder would lead us to the cup.
Needless to say, it never happened. I am a Hawks fan and I will ALWAYS be a Hawks fan.
So what separates me from the fan next to you at the United Center? Why should I have a blog? That's a good and fair question. In my other life, I'm a producer at 670 the Score. I've worked there since January of 2001, and have worked on many shows, including the Mike North Show, and The Mike Murphy Show.
I was the Executive Producer of Blackhawks Hockey when they were on the Score and was able to put my personal, creative stamp on all of their radio broadcasts. Currently, I'm the Executive Producer of the McNeil and Spiegel Show with Dan McNeil and Matt Spiegel (M-F 9am-1pm).
While my main job focus is the show, and it's day to day organization and execution, my roles over the years have given me unique access to the Hawks.
I've had the opportunity to cover the team on several occasions, while I host the Hawks Playoff Postgame Shows on the station. These experiences have given me a number of reliable and credible contacts. I have access and insight that a typical Hawks fan can't get.
With that in mind, I think this blog will be a unique mix of unfiltered, uncensored fan opinion without the wild, baseless speculation that infects many blogs and message boards. I will never lie to you, good or bad.
Now that that's out of the way, let me tell you some personal stuff, so we can feel closer to each other. I grew up in Oak Lawn, and attended St. Laurence High School in Burbank, and Lewis University in Romeoville, where I currently teach adjunct radio classes.
My wife Hope and I were set up because of our love of the Blackhawks, and started dating by going to games. We now live in Palos Heights with our daughter Adelyn and dog Maddux.
