Thursday, the Blackhawks announced the have signed 2012 1st round pick Teuvo Teravainen to a 3-year deal.
Last season, the 18-year old Helsinki, Finland native tallied 13 goals and 18 assists in 44 regular season games for Jokerit. In 2011-12 season, Teravainen was named the SM-Liiga Rookie of the Year.
While it's highly unlikely Teravainen will play for the Blackhawks next season, he could opt to play the season in Rockford to get used to the smaller North American ice surface. He could also decide to return to play in Finland. All of these things will be decided after training camp. If Teravainen has a "Saad-ian" performance, he could get a sniff with the big club early in the season.
In Teravainen, the Blackhawks have a shifty, if small (5-11,169 lbs), playmaker and goal scorer. He is renowned for his on-ice vision and awareness. Constant comparisons to Patrick Kane have been made by media and management types alike. While it's hard to imagine he'll reach that ceiling, he has the potential to be an elite top 6 forward. In fact, anything less than that would be considered a failure and disappointment.
