If former Minnesota Twin and current St. Paul Pioneer Press sports writer Charley Walters is to be believed, the Blackhawks could be part of the 2015 Winter Classic.
According to Walters, the Blackhawks and Minnesota Wild are being considered for the NHL's annual New Year's Day outdoor game at Target Field (the current home of the Minnesota Twins).
While it's obviously very early in the process, the fact that the Hawks and Wild are potentially being considered is great news. With the Blackhawks' only regional and historical rival (the Detroit Red Wings) headed to the Eastern Conference after this season, it's wise to build the Chicago / Minnesota rivalry again. For a stretch of the 80's, the then Minnesota North Stars were the Hawks' top rival. The void left by the Red Wings needs to be filled. Certainly, a Winter Classic could help develop that rivalry.
What makes this report even more exciting is the potential to see the Blackhawks featured on HBO's 24/7 series, which chronicles the weeks leading up to the Winter Classic. The series give unprecedented access to the players, coaches, and front office. It would certainly be an intriguing look at one of the NHL's most successful franchises.
