NHL to cancel more games Monday

Later today, the NHL will announce the cancellation of all regular season games through December 30th.  This according to TSN's Darren Dreger.

This would mark the third round of cancellations the league has mandated so far.

Last week, there was a bit of hope that the season could be saved and the league could try to squeeze in a 50+ game season, but talks quickly deteriorated and the sides haven't met since.

They say it's darkest before the dawn.  Let's hope that's the case this week, and both sides can come together and get a deal done.

UPDATE:  The NHL has made the cancellations official.

The Official Release:

NEW YORK -- The National Hockey League announced today the cancellation of the 2012-13 regular-season schedule through December 30. The cancellations are necessary due to the absence of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement between the NHL Players' Association and the NHL.

A total of 526 regular-season games—42.8 percent of the season—were scheduled for October 11 through December 30.

  • Other than this being your job, does anyone else care at this point? In two weeks, they will announce that they are canceling all games through Jan.15, and so on.

  • In reply to jack:

i think a lot of people care. yes...it's a big part of my job. as it's a big part my job, my finances and family stability depend on hockey. i'm not alone. vendors, business owners, UC employees, etc all rely on the sport to get by. Not to mention the thousands of hockey fans in this city who miss their sport. When football is over, all Chicago fans will have is the Bulls. That will make me miss them more.

  • In reply to Jay Zawaski:

Too bad that those in the peripheral businesses don't have a way to pressure people like Rocky.

And it is always football season on The Score.

  • This really sucks. I just got my family into watching the games with my at the end of last season and now this. One good thing is that it makes me follow Rockford and the Wolves as well as college hockey. People, take a look at the college games. It's not the NHL but there are some very talented kids playing the game in the NCAA and some damn good games to boot. I hope that the players and the owners work this out because winter sucks as it is. But a winter with no hockey?????? What is a hockey fan to do...watch basketball?>???? Please.
