NHL cancels first batch of regular season games

So here we are...

While it shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone, it doesn't make it any easier to stomach.  Thursday, the NHL used a short, cold press release to announce the cancellation of all regular season games through October 24th.

NEW YORK -- The National Hockey League announced today the cancellation of the 2012-13 regular-season schedule through October 24. A total of 82 regular-season games were scheduled for Oct. 11 through Oct. 24.

The cancellation was necessary because of the absence of a Collective Bargaining Agreement between the NHL Players' Association and the NHL.

It doesn't seem like this inevitable cancellation will spur either side to get negotiations started.  In fact, there aren't any meetings planned until next week.

The more time that goes by, the less faith I have that  there will be a season at all.  If they drop the puck by Christmas, it will be an upset.

  • Christmas was a deadline with the NBA because of the Christmas triple header and the threat of treble damages.

    Hockey has no such impetus.
