To think, only months ago LA Kings' winger Dustin Penner was a punchline. Penner, a player who has always battled weight and fitness issues, injured himself eating pancakes. Last night...he became a playoff hero. His overtime winning goal sent the Kings to the Western Conference Finals for the first time since 1993.
It's very easy to fall in love with a player based on a strong playoff run. See Pisani, Fernando or Cullimore, Jassen. Penner is a big left winger...certainly something the Blackhawks could use...but he's not the guy...at least not for the money he will likely command.
His 10 playoff points look nice on paper...but how about those 17 regular season points? He simply can't be trusted to stay in shape and put up points consistently. Penner made $4.25 million last season. This playoff run will likely get him a raise. If that's the case...the Blackhawks would be wise to stay away.
