Niemi signs one year deal with Sharks

Former Hawks goaltender Antti Niemi has signed with the San Jose Sharks.

The deal will pay Niemi $2 million for 1 year.  When the season ends, Niemi will be an unrestricted free agent again.

Earlier in the offseason, the Sharks signed goalie Antero Niittymaki to a 2 year, $2 million deal.

It's assumed Niemi will be the Sharks starting goaltender.

This is the best deal Niemi could have hoped for.  The only other teams who would have realistically considered signing Niemi were the New York Islanders or Edmonton Oilers.  The Sharks are (supposed to be) a solid Cup contender.  Either way, we could certainly see a Marty Turco vs Niemi playoff series next season.
