According to multiple news sources, the body of 31-year-old Canadian born actor, Cory Monteith was found in a British Columbia hotel on Saturday after the talented but troubled actor failed to check out of the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel. Monteith admitted himself into rehab earlier this year for problems with substance addiction. The actor completed treatment in April. Monteith first underwent treatment for addiction issues at the age of 19. Canadian police stated that there isn’t evidence that Monteith fell victim to foul play and would not speculate as to what may have contributed to the actor’s death.
The autopsy is scheduled for Monday, July 15.
All accounts reported thus far describe Cory Monteith as doing very well since rehab. Regardless of how the young actor passed, it is a tragic moment for his family, friends, fans and fellow ‘Glee’ cast members. The toxicology report and results of the autopsy could take weeks, but, sadly, what does come to mind are the many talented actors that did fall victim to alcoholism and addiction, or who died from accidental overdose which is sometimes categorized as ‘death by misadventure’. Some of those incredible actors that immediately come to mind are River Phoenix, Brittney Murphy, Heath Ledger and Chicago’s Second City alum, the beloved Chris Farley.
It is interesting to note that in a 2011 report published by The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, or SAMHSA, 23.5 million persons aged 12 or older needed treatment for an illicit drug or alcohol problem in 2009. Of these, only 2.6 million received it at a specialty facility. To find out more, click here.
