Trump ISN'T Umimpeachable!!

Let's face facts.  Donald Trump must be impeached and the halls of government swept clean.  He has doubtless done MORE than merely evaded his federal income tax.  I can't imagine there's any question but that he conspired with the Russian Federation to cheat his way into the White House.  He's been an unfaithful husband, an indifferent father, a failed businessman, a bully, a racist, an overbearing thug, a bad boss,  and his hair style is nothing more than an ill-conceived combover on steroids.  And these are his GOOD qualities.

And yet for two years I've jitterbugged my way around the impeachment issue, reasoning that life under a President Pence would be worse than life under the Donald.  Well, I was wrong on both counts.  Mike Pence would make an at least marginally competent President.  That is IF the Indiana Troglodyte were to become President.  The fact is that Donald Trump should be impeached precisely because he cheated his way into the Oval Office.  And if Donald Trump got to be President by breaking the law then Mike Pence got to be Vice President for exactly the same reason.  Which means if we throw out Donald Trump we also throw out Mike Pence.  Under the circumstances that would make Nancy Pelosi President of the United States.  In that case, she should name Ruth Bader Ginsburg Vice President, thus giving her the opportunity to name a young, progressive attorney to the  Supreme Court.

One of the important principles of the law is restitution, trying to put people back to where they should have been if the law hadn't failed them.  In this case, overturning the results of the last election would be the right thing to do as it would, in some sense, restore us to the government we legitimately elected in the first place.  The 2016 Presidential election was stolen and we can't get back the time we've lost.  But at least we can invoke some form of legal restitution.

Yes, this solution would shake things up.  BIG TIME!!!  But doesn't America NEED shaking up?  Donald Trump represents the nadir of American political life.  The Presidency of this country has never been in worse hands.  Oh, the country has been in worse shape.  Depressions, wars, assassinations, race hatred, lynchings, bigotry, terrorism, I could go on and on. One could even argue that the election of 1876 was stolen from Samuel Tilden.  But as badly as things have degenerated, I doubt the state of the American Presidency has ever descended to such depths as we have under Donald John Trump.  And why he much be impeached!

Yes this is a radical proposition.  But the sad fact is that radical conditions call for radical propositions.  The alternative is the maintenance of the status quo and we just can't afford that.  Under the best of circumstances the world is a dangerous place.  Nuclear war, diabolical climate change, the undermining of the basic institutions of government, all these threaten us from without and within.  We simply cannot afford to continue with an unstable President manning the ship of state.  That's why President Trump and Vice President Pence must go!!

  • The House will surely impeach, but the question often raised by Bill Clinton is whether the Senate will convict. Doesn't look like it at the moment.

And with Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the real question is whether she will stay alive another 2 years. Her successor before then, even if nominated by a Pres. Pelosi, would still have to be confirmed by this Senate. Ask Merrick Garland how that went.

Only thing that surprises me is that Pence hasn't invoked the 25th Amendment by now, which shows that he isn't fit to be President.

  • In reply to jack:

Pence can't "invoke" the 25th Amendment and even if all the cabinet members went along with it, Trump could appeal it and it would be over. The 25th Amendment was only meant as a temporary band aid, not a permanent fix.

As for Bill Clinton, remember that he was impeached, the Senate failed to convict and he was reelected to a second term.

  • In reply to Bob Abrams:

In that Clinton was impeached in 1998, your chronology is off.

  • Pelosi just said Trump isn't worth impeaching. I agree. Unless, as they say, there absolutely is a smoking gun.

  • In reply to Aquinas wired:

Was so reported. Maybe she wants a unified target in 2020.

  • Two things:

ONE: The Trumpsters not only think that Trump is the greatest president EVER, a good number of them think that he has been anointed by God. They will NEVER leave him, even if he shoots someone on 5th Ave or they find Chelsea Clinton's dismembered body in the White House freezer.

TWO: The House will NOT impeach him, no matter what the Mueller report says because they know that it will only make them look bad and that there is NO WAY 20 Republican senators will EVER vote to remove him.

Those are the FACTS. Everything else is just wishful thinking.
