Bernie Sanders, Don't Let Your Massive Ego Get In The Way!!!

Well, the other shoe has finally dropped.  Geriatric Senator Bernie Sanders announced that he would pursue the Democratic Party's nomination for President of the United States.  And this is fine.  It's a free country and Bernie's entitled to run for whatever political office that attracts his attention.  Unfortunately for Bernie, there is one incontrovertible truth that he cannot possibly deny or ignore.  He ain't a Democrat!!

Yes, Bernie Sanders may be a lot of things, not the least of which is the avatar of the progressive movement within the Democratic Party.  But for all the things Bernie may be, good or bad, one of them that he is NOT is a registered Democrat.  Look it up.  In Vermont Bernie Sanders is registered as an independent socialist.  Now as long as he's running for the Senate from the state of Vermont that's perfectly acceptable to me.  It wouldn't be if I actually LIVED in Vermont, but I don't.  Bernie is running to become, in effect, the national head of the Democratic Party.  And frankly I resent the fact that this man wants to run under the banner of a political party that he would not even deign to join.

From one particular point of view I really don't care whether Bernie Sanders is a Democrat or a member of the Bull Moose Party.  I have esophageal cancer which has spread to my stomach and from there to my rib cage.  So chances are pretty good that I'm not even going to be around to vote in the 2020 Illinois Democratic Presidential primary.  And even if I live long enough to vote in the Presidential election I'm pretty sure I won't survive a Sanders Administration.  Nevertheless, I hate the idea that a man who has such disdain for the party label under which he wishes to run, can ultimately end up as the standard bearer of the very same party.  I said so in 2016 and I see no reason to change my mind now.

Don't get me wrong.  I don't necessarily hate Bernie Sanders as a human being.  He may be an incredibly nice guy.  I don't know the man personally so I can't say.  But nice guy or complete ogre, at the end of the day he still isn't a Democrat and he can't escape that fact.  Why is this important?  Well, in 2016 I put it this way.  If I want to be elected president of a club, it stands to reason that the first thing I have to do is join the club.  I think the same line of reasoning applies to Bernie Sanders.  If he wants the Democratic Party's Presidential nomination the first thing he should do is register as a Democrat.

I've heard from some circles that Bernie would be the ideal candidate for the Democratic Party precisely BECAUSE he isn't a Democrat.  The reasoning goes that a true independent would be most attractive to other independents.  And since independents constitute a major segment of the American voting public, it stands to reason that an independent would be MOST attractive to them.  Makes sense.  Except for one salient fact.  Bernie Sanders represents the extreme left wing of the American political spectrum, much further to the left than most political independents.  Will centrist-minded political independents happily march down the aisle toward democratic socialism lead by the Pied Piper of Vermont?  Somehow I doubt it!

Why is this important?  First and foremost, the characteristic Democrats want MOST from their candidate for President in 2020 is that their candidate can beat the snot out of Donald Trump.  There are at least two factors working against Bernie.  The first is his age.  Many progressives have argued that a candidate like Joe Biden would be too old to run for President in 2020, and they have a point.  But then how do the progressives deal with the fact that Bernie Sanders will be one year OLDER than Joe Biden in 2020?  The second factor working against Bernie is that he isn't a registered Democrat.  How so?  Donald Trump may indeed be a horrible President.  But there's one thing you can say about him as a candidate.  He has this uncanny ability to zero in on an opponent's greatest weakness and exploit the hell out of it.  What do you think he will do with the fact that Bernie hasn't even seen fit to join the Democratic Party even though he's running as a Democrat?  He will beat Bernie Sanders to a pulp with it, that's what he'll do.  Worse yet, Bernie isn't just an independent, he's a self-confessed independent SOCIALIST!

So run if you must Bernie.  It would appear your ego has expanded to the point that you now consider yourself to be THE indispensable man of the Democratic Party.  Well, I hate to tell you this Bernie, but the cemeteries  are literally FILLED with indispensable men.  I can only hope that when all is said and done that  you don't put an inflated ego ahead of the best interests of the United States of America.  We need to defeat Donald Trump for President in 2020.  BADLY!!  Please don't let your ego get in the way of this genuine necessity!!

  • I take it then that you can't support anyone from Minnesota, either, because they aren't Democrats, but members of the DFL Party. Well, I guess the D stands for Democratic.

I think the least of the orange tweeter's concerns is that Bernie isn't a real Democrat, especially since Jussie just gave him fresh ammo.

The real problem, aside from Benie's age, is that being a true Dem isn't possible to establish. Bill Daley is related to several of them but gets his funding from Ken Griffin, and the Operating Engineers point it out. He's also endorsed by the Trib. Editorial Board, who aren't Democrats. There's a TV show now about mastodons in the Chicago area, but it doesn't mention if Ed Burke represented them.

But I still think someone younger will emerge. What bothers me is that the discussion so far is whether Elizabeth Warren is native enough or Kamala Harris is black enough, which should be irrelevant.
