Straight Out Of Compton a crazy MF named Ice Cube.
I had to get that out of my system!
Freshly blessed from seeing, “Straight Out Of Compton”, at the AMC theatre in Vernon Hills, with recliners and alcohol, I can tell you that this movie is one of CubeVisions best.
I went into the movie theatre with popcorn, some chocolate covered raisins, and a watermelon alcoholic mixed drink. The movie could have sucked but I was going to have some, AT LEAST, in the theatre.
Make sure you see this movie in a theatre that has some banging speakers. You will need them to sing, “Gangsta-Gangsta”, “Dopeman", “No Vaseline”, “F-the Police”, and “Nuthin but a G-Thang". I didn’t care about the people next to us, behind us, or squeezed next to my fat butt.
All I cared about was rapping the verses of my favorite rappers songs as loud as I could without getting kicked out of the movie theatre.
“Gangsta Gangsta, that’s what they yellin, It’s not about a salary its all about reality”.
Don’t get me started…
It was important to me that this movie was as accurate as I remember living thru this era as a Hip Hop head, a Local Cable TV Music Video Host, and the biggest fan of ICE CUBE.
When I heard they hired F. Gary Gray I knew this movie would be good.
I DID NOT KNOW IT WOULD BE GREAT!
The director, F. Gary Gray, let the movie do something that many African American produced and targeted movies never have the opportunity to do…BREATHE!
It wasn’t rushed and we learned exactly how the group, N.W.A, was formed.
Showing the violence of gang life overlapped with the brutality of the police, “Straight Out Of Compton”, shows you the pressure that M.C.REN, YELLA, D.R.E, CUBE, and EAZY had to endure. It was this pressure that led to their thought provoking, news editorial, reality lyrics that have spanned many generations of hip hop fans.
Now I am a little biased on N.W.A as this was one of the first 10 groups I ever got to interview thanks to one of Priority Records own at the time, Charm.
There were other people at Priority Records that showed me love at the time. Shout out to Shelly, Mary, Brian, and Mrs. Charbonnet.
You all were responsible for introducing, keeping relevant, and maintaining my relationship with the worlds most dangerous group, N.W.A.
Through the years Ice Cube has been very kind to me giving me several interviews, pushing the rest of N.W.A to do interviews with me, and even performing for my birthday at Austins Fuel Room in Libertyville Illinois.
Things I will mention about the movie that came to my attention while watching,
I WANT A GHERI CURL!
GOTTA STEP MY RAIDERS GEAR UP!
ICE CUBE SON LOOK JUST LIKE THAT MUG!
I AM STILL SCARED OF SUGE KNIGHT!
I REALLY MISS EAZY E!
I WANTED TO HEAR SOME D.O.C SONGS!
I AM STILL SCARED OF SUGE KNIGHT!
I WANTED TO HEAR SOME MICHEL’LE NICETY!
CAN’T A BROTHER GET SOME WORLD CLASS WRECKING CREW COVERAGE!
This has been a great year for Hip Hop Movies. The movie, “D.O.P.E” started the impressive screenwriting and direction and now, “Straight Out of Compton”, pushes the Urban bar even further.
With the box office numbers saying that this could have an opening weekend of 60 million or more the reasons for not targeting the Hip Hop generation with more movies and wider screen openings are fast running out.
Thank you N.W.A for speaking your mind and saying what you had to at all times.
Just my thoughts man…
