We imported American Idol and X Factor! Why can’t we bring LUTHER to the USA?

I know that American Idol and the X Factor have been huge imports on American Television. As a matter of fact almost every game show airing in the USA has had some type of English precursor. It’s not just the game shows either. The comedian game from the U.K has also made its invasion in the states with blocs like Ricky Gervais, Gina Yashere, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Stephen Merchant.

(FYI, Stephen Merchant has an upcoming comedy show that looks hilarious.)

The real meat and potatoes from the U.K are in the dramas. Specifically, Luther. Yes I know there are other shows that are having a huge impact on the American drama landscape including, Being Human, Dr. Who, heck even Sanford and Son was based on a UK show entitled, Steptoe and Son. I doubt they could have called it Steptoe and Son in the United States because Redd Foxx would have sounded crazy talking about, “ I’m coming to you Steptoe”.

The last two nights on BBC America, Idris Elba has been bringing the heat to the United States as, “DSI John Luther”. This show presents an African American as the “Alpha Male” of detectives. Luther is about crazy, sadistic, killers who usually commit the unthinkable crime. That is unless the only person thinking about the crime is Luther.

I have been a fan of this show since its inception. I watched the previous two seasons which last aired about 2 years ago. Tuesday nights re-imagining of the series featured the same gore and silence timing and picked up like the writers and actors never took hiatus.

Many people in the United States remember Idris Elba from the HBO series, “The Wire”, and his stunning transformation into Russell “Stringer” Bell, the Baltimore drug lord and businessman. Others recognize Idris from big screen movies such as American Gangster, Takers, Prometheus and his latest release, Pacific Rim; a film that he co-stars with one of my other favorite actors, Charlie Hunnam, aka Jax Teller, from the Sons of Anarchy.

Idris is also a DJ. A real DJ, not just a celebrity who became a DJ to make side money. Driis, his DJ Name, has put out many mixtapes, EP’s, and I actually heard him live some time ago. Driis can get down on the tables and plays the type of eclectic music that other DJ’s in the states could benefit from.

Idris is an outstanding actor who would do well as the lead actor in a television series based in the United States. (Hint, Hint, Hint)

But for now I suggest you watch Luther tonight at 8pm Central Standard time on BBC America. It is not for the faint of heart or for your children but it is appointment television for grown folks.

Just my thoughts man.
