Benjamin Marshall may not be on the tip of every Chicagoan's tongue when it comes to great hometown architects but when you stack him up against the more well known names he stands tall.
This year is the 100th anniversary of one of Marshall's greatest accomplishments. He designed 5 of the 8 buildings that line East Lake Shore Drive, including the magnificent Drake Hotel, 209 East Lake Shore Drive, and most of the grand buildings that catch the eye of south bound drivers as they navigate the graceful curve at Oak Street and Lake Shore Drive.
The Benjamin Marshall Society, headquartered in Northbrook, has organized a very special event to take place at the Drake on March 4, 2011 starting at 6:30 pm. There will be a silent auction, dinner and dancing the night away! The proceeds will benefit the Society, dedicated to preserving Marshall's noteworthy legacy. For more information just go to the Society's website at www.benjaminmarshallsociety.org .
Marshall lived at the Drake towards the end of his life, and he was very stylish, hence the invites remind everyone that Top Hats might be quite appropriate attire for this lavish event!
I am proud to have worked with numerous clients along the elegant block that begins at Michigan Avenue and ends at Lake Shore Drive. Here is a photo from my listing in the 209 East Lake Shore Drive building that gives you a feel for the sumptuous lines and graceful layouts that Marshall put into his creations.
Also consider a little more low key event that is coming up on Sunday, February 13, when a presentation on the life and times of Benjamin Marshall is being given at the Northbrook Public Library at 2:00 PM.
Have a great weekend everyone!
