Top 5 events for families in Chicago this weekend: January 10, 11 and 12

The weekend is finally here - and with it comes much-needed, warmer temperatures in Chicago. After burrowing deep inside our homes the earlier part of this week, it's time to emerge from our Polar Vortex-induced hibernation and take advantage of the great family activities happening around Chicago this weekend.

Here is the Raising World Citizens list of the top five events for families in Chicago this weekend - Friday, January 10, Saturday, January 11, and Sunday, January 12.

1. The Travel and Adventure Show
Donald E. Stephens Convention Center, 5555 N. River Rd., Rosemont
Sat., Jan. 11, 10 am - 5 pm and  Sun., Jan. 12, 11 am - 4 pm
One-day event tickets are $10 online and $15 at the door (Kids 16 years old and under are free)

Family travel enthusiasts will want to beeline over to The Travel and Adventure Show at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont this weekend. At the show, you can interact with real Alaskan sled dogs, scuba dive in a 15,000-gallon scuba pool, and see home of Sea World Park & Entertainment's "wild" friends. You also can see musical and dance performances from around the world, learn about global cuisine from leading chefs, and speak to travel representatives from "dream destinations" around the world. I'm particularly looking forward to meeting (or at least hearing from) some of the biggest names (and TV personalities) in travel, including Samantha Brown, Rick Steves and Pauline Frommer.

2. Attrape-Moi by Flip FabriQue
Athenaeum Theatre, 2936 N. Southport Ave., Chicago (Lakeview)
Fri., Jan. 10 at 4 pm; Sat., Jan. 11 at 8 pm; Sun., Jan. 12 at 5 pm

The Attrape-Moi performances are part of the 2014 Chicago Contemporary Circus Festival, which runs from January 6 - 12 and features national, international and local public performances, master classes, workshops and seminars. Flip FabriQue artists have performed for companies such as Cirque du Soleil and Cirque Éloize. The 75-minute Attrape-Moi show (with no intermission) is packed with jaw-dropping feats and entertainment.

Another great Chicago Contemporary Circus festival performance to see is the American Youth Circus Organization Young Artist Showcase. On Sunday, January 12 at 1 pm, more than 40 young artists, ages 6 - 21 years old from 13 states, will showcase their circus skills for all to see. The performance also takes place at the Athenaeum Theatre.
