4 a.m.

4 a.m.
Tick Tock. It’s four o’clock. Do you know where your mama is? Right here in  the dark eyes of the room, trying to find my sheep to count. But they aren’t in my  pasture.  They are having tacos with the sandman. My sheep are taking a lunch break from their jumping duties. Not good. With... Read more »

I Am Mother Nurture

I Am Mother Nurture
I am Mother Nurture. I’m good at it. I’m excellent at listening to your problems, giving you insightful yet honest advice, holding your hand, hugging and empathizing. I’m so good, sometimes I offer it without you asking. Not trying to be bossy or controlling. I just want to help. Take it easy with me. My... Read more »

I Wish My Parents Knew...

I Wish My Parents Knew...
Did you read about the Denver teacher, Kyle Schwartz who devised a unique way to get to know her students better? She asked her children to complete the sentence, “I Wish My Teacher Knew…”  Schwartz received some honest and heart felt responses such as, ”I wish my teacher knew… I have no friends to play with.”... Learning history from Jet magazine under my Granny's shadow

Learning history from Jet magazine under my Granny's shadow
Jet magazine was my childhood encyclopedia to real black life. I still  remember the smell of pecans and walnuts in the wooden drawer of the inlay vanity in my Great Granny’s room. Yes, the smell of it with faint perfume of a bygone era, mixed with bobby pins cloaked me in a wave of bittersweet... Read more »

Let's Celebrate, National Be Kind to Black Men Day

Let's Celebrate, National Be Kind to Black Men Day
Given the state of our national affairs, I propose a new holiday, “National Be Kind to Black Men Day”. Why? It seems like Black men are the new target in America. Oh! let me take that back. They aren’t the new target,  They have always been the target. But we’re in the new millennium, so... Read more »

A letter to my curly, frizzy, thin hair

My Dearest Curly, Frizzy, Thin Hair, I never understood you. I’ve known you all my life. We were born together. Your black strands were my beanie cap on my newborn head. But as I grew, you twisted and turned into a fine thin fuzz that refused to stay down. You loved to frizz when the... Read more »

"Edye, Meet Maya Angelou" My Rites of Passage....
The first grown-up book my mother introduced me to was “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” by Maya Angelou. I was 14 at the time; a wide-eyed and eager freshman who was embarking on her first high school book report odyssey. I was assigned to read an autobiography and write about it. The year... I pursued a satisfying career in the advertising industry, served as a volunteer mentor and parent educator at my two (now grown up) sons' schools and have actually stayed happily married for over a quarter of a century. However, my most gratifying achievement was raising my sons well. I'm not saying there wasn't a little bit of hell raising going on, but you live and learn. Now I'm passing the knowledge on to you. My goal is to turn these nuggets of wisdom into reference books for parents.
