This Blog vs. that Book

This Blog vs. that Book

I'm guilty as charged.  I sacrificed the upkeep of this blog to finish writing a book; a parenting book that is, aptly named Raising Hell or Raise Them Well. My feverish quest to complete the thing forced me to keep this blog in semi-limbo. But I've been writing and rewriting this book for well over five years! In fact, The Raising Hell or Raise Them Well book existed before this blog.

I wouldn't have been so vigilant if I didn't think this book was the TRUTH. It's a timely, faith-inspired, self-help reference guide that speaks to under-served parents who are under siege; If you're a mom, dad, baby mama, baby daddy, grandparent, stepparent, foster parent, auntie, uncle, guardian, or caregiver and you find raising kids to be a challenge, this guide is for you. I wish there was a book like this when my children were younger.

Let's be clear, I have no Masters in Psychology, No PhD in Behavioral Sciences, and I am not a social worker. But I am a mom of two grown sons and grandmom to two grandsons. I've struggled with my own parenting issues. It's difficult raising children of color - especially boys - when society views them as menaces to society. What about the hell you go through dealing with your own personal issues? That also influences how you parent. I was blessed with an involved husband. But sometimes our parenting styles clashed which created even hotter hell at home.

As a mentor to teen moms, parents, new church members and students, I learned a lot about the struggles of other families. Parents often came to me for advice. In my quest for resources, I found that general parenting books didn't address the unique challenges of the "less privileged". So I wrote the book myself.

I may have dropped the ball on consistently maintaining this blog, but it was worth it. I consider Raising Hell or Raise Them Well my legacy and gift to the world. Call me naive, but I honestly think it will make a difference. I know I can't change the world, but reaching one parent can change the trajectory of a family's life for the better.

I pursued a satisfying career in the advertising industry, served as a volunteer mentor and parent educator at my two (now grown up) sons' schools and have actually stayed happily married for over a quarter of a century. However, my most gratifying achievement was raising my sons well. I'm not saying there wasn't a little bit of hell raising going on, but you live and learn. Now I'm passing the knowledge on to you. My goal is to turn these nuggets of wisdom into reference books for parents.
