Grown folks killing kids: Makes me wanna kill a mutha...

I remember going to school with a little girl named Becky Beck. She was much younger than me, a little annoying but just a seven-year-old who was caught in between a bitter custody battle. One day our school headmaster gathered all of the students together and informed us that Becky's dad, a mild mannered frumpy old chap with pasty skin and Mr. Peabody glasses, took a shotgun and blew Becky away and did the same to himself. We were stunned! I felt bad that I thought she was annoying. I realized she was just sad and afraid.

It made me wanna kill a mutha....

Last November, in a Florida gas station, a man shot a flurry of bullets into a car full of  unarmed teenaged boys for not turning down their music. Jordan Davis, a passenger in the backseat, was killed. The shooter, a vice president of a computer software company, was arrested the next day. The shooter said  he felt his life was threatened.  Stand Your Ground better NOT apply to this case.

Makes me wanna kill a mutha...

I think about that poor sweet six-month-old baby Jonylah Watkins. On a March evening, her daddy had just changed her diaper when some punk pulled up to their minivan and shot the baby and father multiple times. The baby died; revenge over an alleged theft of  drugs and a video game system.

Makes me wanna kill a mutha…

Grown folks killing kids. And so the story goes. And the rage continues. And children die of violence. Thousands of senseless child deaths by the hands of  adults who take their rage out on the  little  ones.

Makes me wanna kill a mutha…

But wait...isn't this the very emotion that provokes people to pick up a gun in the first place? Instead of thoughts of killing a mutha, maybe turning to the Father in prayer is in order.

Dear Lord, suffer the little children to come unto You. Bless these angels now in your flock. Bless the families and heal their hearts. Deliver the homicidal, suicidal mothers, fathers, brothas and crazy others... that they turn to You while justice is served.

I pray this prayer as a mother.

I pursued a satisfying career in the advertising industry, served as a volunteer mentor and parent educator at my two (now grown up) sons' schools and have actually stayed happily married for over a quarter of a century. However, my most gratifying achievement was raising my sons well. I'm not saying there wasn't a little bit of hell raising going on, but you live and learn. Now I'm passing the knowledge on to you. My goal is to turn these nuggets of wisdom into reference books for parents.
