There are a lot of great activities on tap this week to celebrate the animals and help out homeless pets in the Chicago area. Leading up to Mothers in the Mills on Saturday are several great volunteer opportunities, Voices for Animals in Springfield and a belated Cinco de Mayo – Running of the Chihuahua’s in Waukegan.
Yes, spring has sprung and it’s time to get off your “I’m sick of the winter” duff and help some animals. Here’s a look at Chicago pet events through Mother’s Day.
Tuesday, May 6
Chicago - Chicago Animal Care and Control is hosting a volunteer orientation starting at 6 p.m. If you really want to save lives, this is the place to go. CACC needs a variety of volunteer to help care for and network animals. They need adoption and adoption screening volunteers, lost pet volunteers, customer service volunteers and volunteer veterinarians. Details here and you may register here.
Wednesday, May 7
Springfield – It’s your chance to let your voices be heard for the animals in Springfield at Illinois Voices for Animals Day. Join the ASPCA, the Animal Welfare Institute, the Illinois Animal Welfare Federation, Born Free USA and fellow animal advocates as they meet with elected officials to discuss animal welfare legislation. Thursday, May 8
Chicago – Learn about what it takes to foster a dog or cat at the Anti-Cruelty Society’s Foster Open House from 5 to 7 at 169 West Grand Avenue. Receive a behind the scenes tour and learn what it takes to foster at ACS.
Huntley – FYDOLAND at 11221 Dundee Road will be holding two dog training sessions this evening. Puppy Playskool will start at 7 and Basic Obedience at 8.
Friday, May 9
Chicago – Make the work week disappear with a night of magic and fun to support Harmony House for Cats. Abra-Cat-Dabra will be at O’Donovan’s Pub and Restaurant from 7 to 9 at 2100 West Irving Park Road. Advance tickets are $30 (purchase here by Wednesday) and they will be $35 at the door. Tickets include Nacho Bar, wine, beer and soda.
Saturday, May 10
Chicago – Wiggleyville in the West Loop at 1135 West Madison will have a charity dog wash from 9 to 2 p.m. to benefit Safe Humane Chicago. Your pup will be washed and dried in time for Mother’s Day for just $15. Also enter the contest for a great Mother’s Day gift drawing.
Shorewood – It’s a Pittie Rescue hosts an adoption event at the Home Depot at 621 Brook Forest Avenue from 9 to 2. Fill out an adoption form in advance and come and check out the great pets looking for families.
Rockford – Angels 4 Animals remembers the Mothers in the Mills with a pet store protest on the eve of Mother’ Day. The protest will be from 11 to 1 at Cherryvale mall at 7200 Harrison Avenue – they are asking protesters to wear black.
Downers Grove – Get ready for spring and help the pets at the West Suburban Humane Society at 1901 West Ogden Avenue at the same time with Petals for Pets. The plant sale benefitting the Humane Society will be from 9 to 3 and will feature annuals, perennials, potted and flats.
Chicago – Chicago Animal Care and Control has an open house for volunteers at 1:30. See details on Tuesday night.
Gurnee – It’s never to late to celebrate Cinco De Mayo at the First Running of the Chihuahuas at Central Bark from 4 to 7. Central Bark at 128 North West Street is opening its doors for this Yappy Hour benefitting Waukegan Animals Getting Saved (WAGS). There will be doggy socializing from 4 to 5:30 (no costumes yet), Chihuahua races at 5:30 and a costume contest from 6 to 6:30. Details here.
Chicago – Join The Puppy Mill Project for their Annual Mothers in the Mills benefit at John Barleycorns at 149 West Kinzie from 6:30 to 10:30. Janet Davies will be on hand as TPMP celebrates their great year and raises money for Millie’s Mission to help puppy mill rescues. City Clerk Susana Mendoza, County Commission John Fritchey, Rescuer Bernie Berlin and grade schooler Jane Clarke for their work this past year. See story and get tickets here.
