For the past 20 years, The Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society International have celebrated World Spay Day as a way to get the word out of the importance of spaying and neutering animals to save lives. Yesterday was the 20th annual World Spay Day...a day that focuses not only on our pets but also the feral and stray cats and stray dogs that could be facing euthanasia.
In Chicago, Tree House Humane Society has put off their celebration until Friday and they have big plans in the works. Tree House hopes to have their biggest one day for spaying or neutering animals as they shoot to spay or neuter 60 free roaming cats throughout the day - the surgeries will be free. Last year, the organization hoped to sterilize 50 cats and ended up with a record 55 in one day. Chicago residents dropped off free roaming community cats and the group did a massive trapping in a neighborhood as well.
Why is this such a big deal?
Even though we've just had one of the worst winters on record in Chicago, the kittens are already starting to roll in at Chicago Animal Care and Control and at other organizations. When the thaw hits, there will be even more kittens anyplace cat colonies are going unchecked and kitten season will be in full swing. Last year's efforts netted several mom-to-be cats which cut down on the number of homeless kittens needing adoption later in the year.
If you have stray or feral cats in your Chicago neighborhood, there is still room to for appointments.
