National Spay and Neuter Month: No more Sex and the Kitty

National Spay and Neuter Month: No more Sex and the Kitty

February is National Spay and Neuter Month and if you've not had your cat fixed yet, it's a great time to check out programs in and around Chicago. Tree House Humane Society is holding their annual Sex and the Kitty campaign while Hinsdale Humane Society is also offering a program.

Although we’ve had a colder than average winter, February still marks the start of peek pregnancy season for cats. That could mean the feral cats in your neighborhood or your own cat that is in and out and roaming free at certain times. The average cat can have 2 to 3 litters a year with 3 to 5 kittens per litter. That adds up quickly at local shelters and that is why it's so important to get your cat or free roaming cats in for a spay or neuter.

Sex and the Kitty - Tree House Programs

FoundAnimals_SpayNeuterMonth1If you live in Cook County, Tree House Humane Society in conjunction with Cook County’s Spay & Neuter Rebate and the Humane Society of the United States is offering special packages during the month. The following services will be available through Tree House’s Spay and Neuter Clinic for Cook County residents only -

  • Free-roaming (feral and stray) cat packages are free.
  • For individuals receiving public assistance, surgeries for pet male cats are free, $13 for female pet cats
  • For the general public, surgeries for male pet cats are $10, $35 for female pet cats

To participate, kittens must be at least 3 months old. A valid rabies certificate is required for you to qualify for the rebate. If your cat hasn’t had a rabies vaccine, he or she may get vaccinated that day for an extra fee. Some of the other services available at an additional charge include vaccinations, parasite treatment, pain medication, micro-chipping and virus-testing. Book an appointment at the Tree House BDVM Spay and Neuter Clinic at 773-227-5535 ext. 0 or

World Spay Day Spay-A-Thon

HSUSLogo_60Years_CelebratingTree House will be celebrating World Spay Day by offering a free Spay-A-Thon for 60 free-roaming cats on Friday, February 28. Cats must be dropped off and picked up in humane traps the same day – limit five cats per person and appointments are needed.

Tree House encourages the public to not only spay/neuter their pets, but to practice TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return), the only effective and humane way to manage the estimated 300,000  feral or "community cats" in Cook County.

    Raining Cats and Dogs

I am a crazy cat lady and puppy mill warrior that blogs to advocate and educate about pet issues. In American animal controls, millions of pets are abandoned each year and an estimated 4 million die just because there are not enough homes. It truly seems like it’s Raining Cats and Dogs.
