Summer’s over, the kids are back in school and it’s time to check out some fun Chicago pet events this coming week. The West Town Pup Crawl wraps up with the last paw-ty of the summer, there's the Chicago Pet Show, Paws on the Path Pet-A-Thon, a beach Party, Hogs for Dogs and so much more. Check out the events below.
Tuesday, September 3
It’s your last chance this summer to stop by Chicago’s best pup crawl. Chicago Canine Concierge wraps up the summer West Town Pup Crawl with one last night of puppy party fun at Mahoney’s and the other dog friendly bars in the neighborhood. From 6 to 8 tonight, 15 percent of the proceeds of bar sales at Mahoney’s will benefit the Midwest Shibu Inu Rescue. Mahoney’s is at Ogden and Grand and leashed, friendly dogs are welcome.
Wednesday, September 4
Join concerned citizens at the Kendall County Fairgrounds as they protest the Kelly Miller Circus that will be performing two shows at the fairgrounds today. A peaceful protest will be held at 4 p.m. to educate the public about the care, treatment and training methods used on the animals in that Circus. Updated details are here.
Saturday, September 7 and Sunday, September 8
The Knockbox Cafe at 1001 North California in Chicago is hosting The Dog Days of Summer from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. both days. Your pooch is welcome for pampering and local pet-centric stores will be on hand with products and more. Lucida Puppy Fund will be on hand to raise funds for one of their newest rescues.
Shelters and rescues and pet groups – oh my! All this and more at the Chicago Pet Show at the Darien Sportsplex at 451 Plainfield Rd from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. both days. There will be pet rescues and shelters along with lots of other pet-related organizations and vendors with cool pet products for purchase. Go here for $1 off coupons. This is a great Chicago pet event for pet lovers of all shapes and sizes.
Renegade Craft Fair is a curated indie-craft marketplace showcasing the brightest talents in contemporary craft and design. The show is from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. on Division in Wicker Park. There will be many Chicago area pet rescues on hand as well.
Saturday, September 7
Join Dr. Ian Dunbar for a full day workshop about the Dominance Myth: Fearfulness, Reactivity & Aggression in Dogs. The seminar runs from 9:30 to 5:30 at The Anti-Cruelty Society and is $90 per person. It focuses on research based on 30 years of behavioral studies from Yale and Berkeley.
Get your dog all spiffy for the fall at the CARE Fall Dog Wash at the Evanston Animal Shelter from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. A wash and towel dry is $10 and nail trims are also $10. The shelter is across the street from the Home Depot on Oakton and parking is in PetSmart lot. Check out the pets looking for homes and more at this Chicago pet event.
If you love pets, Villa Park is the place to be today for the Paws on the Path Pet-A-Thon from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. downtown. There will be many pet rescues, pet vendors and a kids’ activity tent and “pup” tent with dog activities. A free Knowing Your Pet’s Health workshop will be at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Bring donations for a pet food drive for shelter pets.
Join CARF: Critical Animal Rescue Foundation for an Adopt-a-Kitty Bash (and cuddle session) from 2 to 4 p.m. at Village West Veterinary at 840 North Western Avenue. Check out all the kittens and cats needing homes.
The Justin and Alicia Mentell Dog Agility Playground will hold its grand opening at Waukegan's Callahan-Franklin Dog Park from 2 to 4 p.m. at 1720 Western Avenue. Try out the agility area, check out the nose work demonstration and dog and rally obedience. Goodie bags and vendors.
The Illinois Doberman Rescue Plus (IDR+) hosts their 10th Anniversary Gala Fundraiser at the Ridgemoor Country Club in Harwood Heights. The event gets underway at 5 p.m. and the $100 ticket covers appetizers, dinner and some drinks. (Read more about their work here and here.)
Dr. Ian Dunbar will have a 2 ½ hour presentation and question and answer session about the Dominance Myth. This is a great event for breeders, trainers, pet owners and anyone who interacts with animals. Tickets are $30 and the event runs from 7 to 9:30 at The Anti-Cruelty Society.
Sunday, September 8
Join the Buddy Foundation for The Buddy Walk at 9 a.m. at Melas Park in Arlington Heights. Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for kids with proceeds benefiting the animals in the care of the rescue.
Hop on your Harley (or any bike) for the Hogs for Dogs and Kitties Too charity ride benefitting Heartland Animal Shelter. Registration starts at 10:30 and the first bikes head out at 11:45 from Heartland at 2975 North Milwaukee in Northbrook. After a leisurely observation ride through the Northern Suburbs, the group ends at Side-Outs for an after Paw-ty starting at 2 p.m. (See story.)
It's a puppy-palooza from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Orland Hills PetSmart when the South Suburban Humane Society holds an adoption event.
Spend the afternoon at the beach with Secondhand Snoots. Enjoy the beach party with cocktails, appetizers and fun auction items while raising funds for the rescue. The party will be from 1 to 4 p.m. at Lindy’s Landing at 115 Park Street in Waucanda. Tickets are $20 in advance for adults and $10 for kids (there is a fee for online purchase.)
Celebrate two of the great things in life – Pets and Grandparents – at the Grandparent’s Day/Pet-a-Palooza at Westminster Place at 3200 Grand in Evanston. There will be pet rescues, a Canine Good Citizenship Test, pet parade, booths from pet providers and more. The event runs from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Canine Good Citizen is at 11:30 and cost is $20.) Event benefits participating rescues.
