It’s belly rub time a lot these days for a pittie by the name of Sweet Caroline. Earlier this month, life wasn’t so rosy after she was hit by a car and sat in an animal control without treatment for five days. Now, she’s on the mend and living large in foster care thanks to It’s A Pittie Rescue. Since she's settled in, the good times never seemed so good for Sweet Caroline.
The rescue stepped up on July 5th after someone reached out to the organization about the dog. She had come into a suburban animal control on July 1 with injuries consistent with being hit by a car. During the five days she sat in animal control, she received no treatment or meds to help her with the pain.
Since coming into the care of It’s a Pittie, she’s had surgery and has moved into a foster home. She’s settling in and sweet personality is really shining through. She’s discovering that there’s a sweet life ahead thanks to bully sticks and the other comforts of home.
“She loves belly rubs, rolling around in the grass and she also loves cheese,” says Candy Todd Moore of It’s a Pittie. “Her foster family gave a stuffed gorilla toy and she really likes that. So far, it is still in one piece. They also bought her a very soft blanket for naptime, which she loves to sleep on.”
What her foster family has found out is that Sweet Caroline is more than just sweet…she’s a dog with a lot of spunk. Which is good and bad news while she’s trying to recover from her injuries.
“She has been really great about the casts and hasn’t had to use the "cone of shame" at all,” adds Moore. “It doesn't seem like she has figured out that she has had surgery on two of her legs - she tries to jump and run and play. Her foster family has tried to explain to her that isn't a good idea!”
The surgeon had some initial concerns about Sweet Caroline's ability to empty her bladder. However, she is going potty like a champ so that was a relief to everyone. The surgeon thinks her injuries may also be older than first suspected.
Per the surgeon's instructions they have been trying to keep her as calm as possible. But, since she’s found a new life, she is ready to live it to the fullest.
Sweet Caroline’s story illustrates the great things that can happen when rescues and individuals step up to help an animal in need. The foster family that took in Sweet Caroline had not fostered before. Moore says they are doing an amazing job.
“They have really gone above and beyond,” says Moore. “Rhonda said that if anyone has ever been on the fence about fostering, to take that leap and do it. I have fostered dogs with medical issues, and it certainly isn't easy - but it is absolutely worth it. They know they have been given a second chance and they are so grateful for it.”
Sweet Caroline and It’s a Pittie also need your help. The veterinary bills to get her on the mend are already over $5,000. Sweet Caroline has her own Facebook page to track her progress.
