King Sized Modern Courthouse Steps Top is finished - phew

Cue the confetti, the king sized modern courthouse steps top is finished. What a relief. I have mentioned that I was over the process of making the blocks. Putting the blocks into strips and the strips together as the top went fast and was fun.

This top is 120.5" by 100.5" and that is a lot of fabric. I took it downstairs and put it on the bed with the help of my quilt hubby. It fit the mattress and bed just like I had hoped.

It also seemed to coordinate with the wall quilt I made a number of years ago. I wondered if it was modern enough. I really wanted it to look modern.dsc04736

I not only looked at it but I took pictures. Sometimes I perceive things more clearly by studying a picture. It clears the viewing field.

I decided that it will do. I know I will like it more when it is all quilted up. I always like the quilts more than the tops.

Quilting it brings up another challenge due to the immense size of this mammoth quilt. In 2010, when I bought my dsc04730longarm I had just finished hand quilting a king sized quilt. dsc04732

I wanted to be able to quilt a king sized quilt on my long arm if I ever needed to. 7 years late that foresight paid off. The top will fit when I load it.

However, to load it I need a back. This back will need to be wider than 120" which is pretty darn wide. I have a piece of backing fabric that is 108" wide.

I also have six yards of green fabric that would need an additional 42 inches of fabric added to it. At least I wouldn't be cutting a wide piece of fabric, I'll save that for a quilt that's about 100" wide.

I shall create a back from the green fabric. I am already thinking of various options I have for that. I think I can create something suitable with the fabric I have on hand, and in the process I will reduce my prodigious stash.

Just don't let me buy any more green fabric!
