When I taught I got to spend lots of time with my girls in the summer, it was my favorite season no questions asked. Now that I don't work full time any more I've come to the conclusion that while there are terrific things about summer, it's not my favorite season. I really prefer Spring and Fall. What about Summer? Well, summer is a great time to sew.
Before the summer fans come over and TP my place let me say that I am a huge fan of certain aspects of summer. Farmers' Markets with all their fresh local food are magnificent! Eating outside on patios at restaurants, can't get enough of it. Daylight savings time with night starting late, I adore it! Swimming in outdoor pools can be glorious as well.
But summer is hot and here in Chicago it can be darn hot. Sweaty hot. I am not a fan of sweat running down my body and collecting where I wish it wouldn't. My feet and hands swell. I get sunburned. Hold on, there are more things that aren't my favorite. Bugs bite me, I scratch the bites and we're off to the races for welts and general itchiness. Fine, I will stop whining now.
What is the answer to this? Air conditioning and I have more than a certain amount of guilt saying that. I KNOW it is bad for the environment and that I lived without it in my youth. In all other areas of my life I try to reduce my carbon footprint. I recycle, we have water saving toilets and showers. All of our appliances are energy saving. I use cloth napkins and keep my heat very very low. But I crank up the AC.
I live in a second floor condo and my sewing studio is the loft above. Without the air on, I could not sew. With the air on I can sew and be happy as can be. I am sweat and bug free. I can be productive. I used to sew all my presents in the summer. Now that I don't work and our family doesn't exchange I can sew whatever I want and look out into the bright sun.
Don't get me wrong, I still take advantage of summer but I'd rather walk, bike and travel when it is cooler out. Of course, I like to sew in those seasons also but my two favorite seasons for stitching are summer and winter. I know you're scowling at me. Can I sew you up a little something, would that make it better?
No matter what season it is, Sew happy!

Is this my only post that talks about a season? No! Here's a wintery sort of one.
