Quilt raffles are a fairly ubiquitous part of the sewing world. Are they worth it, should you buy a ticket? YES! The odds are much better than the lottery and even better, grasping cousins won't come crawling out of all corners of your life to beg for a few bucks. If you win, that quilt will be all yours, no need to share. I have experienced the world of quilt raffles from various angles. I have sold quilt raffle tickets, I have bought quilt raffle tickets and one lucky time, I won a quilt raffle. It was a life changing moment for me, for real!
I have had my share of heartache in my life and gone through some yucky times. It all began to change in 1996 but I don't think I realized it until I won this fabulous quilt. My local quilt store is located a little over a block from my condo, I know, it is amazingly wonderful. After a quilt camp weekend, they raffled off a Breast Cancer quilt they had all helped make. I really just wanted to donate to a good cause, I never thought I would win in a million years. I didn't think of myself as lucky, I focused more on what didn't go right in my life. When the owner called to say I had won, I walked up there practically dazed. Sure enough, they handed me a quilt, just handed it to me!
All kinds of women had worked on that quilt from choosing fabric, to making the blocks, quilting it and binding it. Lots and lots of people had bought tickets for one dollar apiece and yet here I was, with this quilt in my hands. It made me look at my life differently, to change my narrative. Hey, I was a lucky person, I was the kind of person who won a pink and white quilt! I realized how many other ways I had such a good life and that the sad, dark days were over. I was not just a winner, but a quilt winner!
Next time you get a chance to buy a quilt raffle ticket, grab it. For a mere dollar, you could win the work of many women and the envy of all. At the very least you have contributed to a very good cause and maybe, just maybe you could be a quilt winner also! Quilt raffles could just change your life, or make you realize how it already has.
