Making easy peasy boy quilts - part one

rezb1I have made quilts for Zara and have another girl quilt on the Long arm.  But not everyone in the world has a baby girl.  I know, I was surprised also!  Some pregnant friends are having baby boys so I thought I better crack off a few baby boy quilts.  And if you are making one, well, what the heck you might as well make two.  Remember the book I talked about last week?  It has some terrific ideas for quilts and many of them used fun fabrics as the block which makes the sewing much easier.

I decided to make a pretty basic one with SPACE fabric.  In fact, I chose two sets of fabric and doubled each.  Here's the first set and the book open to the page I chose.  bqre1I cut the strips but kept them separated, not sure why.  Just to give me a feeling of accomplishment maybe?  Or to make sure I really was making two!

I didn't follow all the directions, I flash pieced everything, lattice blocks onto theme centers and lattice blocks onto the cornerstones.  It bqre2really makes things go faster!  I sewed the frame fabric on both sides of the theme blocks.

I cut those up and flipped them so the writing, etc. would be properly aligned.  Then I sewed the frame fabric onto the remaining two sides. bqre3  I was pretty happy, the sewing was going pretty darn fast.  If I wasn't making two and watching Zara during the day, I think I could have easily made a quilt in a day and  quilted it to boot!

At this point you have to be careful when you use your rotary cutter to cut the blocks apart.  The pattern has you cut the third fabric into 9.5 inch strips but I again flash pieced it all.rebq4

After I cut those up, I was ready for a little break.  Tomorrow I will work on the corner stone blocks and setting the block strips up.  My goal is to have one of these on the longarm by the end of the week.  Why the hurry?  Well, full disclosure, one of these baby boys has already been born.  So yes, this quilter is a bit behind.  Lucky for me there are such fun, fast patterns out there!

Oh, and don't let the Mom know about the quilt.  Lucky for me, Mothers of newborns are too busy to do much blog reading!

Sew happy!
