Today was the Grand Finale for our Farewell to Arms book club. Last week I posted pictures of the Italian aprons I made for our Hemingway discussion. I had to really sew like crazy to get two table runners done because one of them was reversible. Here is how the table looked when it was set. Normally we have about ten readers who come but the weather in Chicago did what the weather here does - it got funky. We had bits of icy rain and some sleet, worse in some areas than others so our full contingent didn't make the discussion. Darn it! But what are you going to do?
As the book, A Farewell to Arms, takes place in Italy we had an Italian picnic theme for our meal. Only half of the members who RSVP'ed actually made it but we had Italian sub sandwiches, caprese salad and olives served on an Italian themed table runner. Is there more fun than reading with friends and sewing for when you get together? Nope, I didn't think so! Here is a view of the table runner without the food. On the back, I used the top and bottom fabrics. I quilted this one on my longarm and each block has a double square quilted into it.
I also made little kleenex covers from the extra fabric. You can see them in the picture of the set table. That reminds me, I should do a blog tutorial on making those, such a fun, super easy project. Here is the back of the runner that you can see in the first picture. When my card group comes for pizza, it will be perfect!
I can't wait until our Pride and Prejudice discussion, I am thinking garden party!
