In 1794

Eli Whitney patented the cotton gin.

And extended the life of

Our original sin.*

* This very common meme for slavery should not be misconstrued to suggest it is essentially like the original sin promulgated in the Old Testament. Something slaveowners used to absolve themselves of guilt.  It is better understood to mean the "sin"  our nation's Founding Fathers  committed by institutionalizing slavery in the Constitution.

    However, if you are saying that cotton production would not have continued, Whitney didn't invent rayon.
