Today's the birthday of Hans Bethe,
The nuclear scientist whose data
Extrapolated how our Sun
Used fusion energy to run.*
*"It took awhile for physicists to learn enough about specific nuclear reactions---how likely they were, how much energy they produced, and so on; but in 1938 an answer was obtained. In that year German-American physicist Hans Albrect Bethe worked out a series of nuclear reactions that were all possible under the conditions which were thought to prevail in the interior of the Sun. The net result of these reactions was that four atoms of hydrogen were converted to one atom of helium with the liberation of about 27.6 Mev." Isaac Asimov in "The Neutrino"
