Nathan Hale: The Embodiment of Patriotism

hale2

Born today was Nathan Hale,
British tried him for a spy.
Facing death he didn't quail.*
Sweet for country 'twas to die.

*"He behaved with great composure and resolution, saying he thought it the duty of every good Officer to obey any orders given him by his Commander-in-Chief and desired the Spectators to be at all times prepared to meet death in whatever shape it might appear."  British officer who witnessed Hale's hanging.

  • Sad story on this American patriot. It appears his reconnaissance on the British never made it back to Washington (who had slaves).

And it's too bad we don't have a patriot in the Illinois legislator.
