Rick Santorum's miraculous rise in the polls ---he now holds an 8 point lead on Romney--- has been duly noted by the Republican hierarchy and he may be close to canonization. The greatest miracle of all would be if Santorum does become president. Just think of the symptoms of conversion disorder that would break out across the country!
Santorum has emerged as the champion--the David--- of the Christian Right. And he wields the Bible like a slingshot. "It's not about you," Santorum said on Face The Nation yesterday. "It's not about your quality of life. It's not about your jobs. It's about some phony ideal. Some phony theology. Oh, not a theology based on the Bible---a different theology."
Eve picked an apple in the Bible. Santorum picks cherries. He steers clear of the teachings of Jesus on peace and justice. Just two of Obama's phony ideals. Instead, Santorum gleans the Good Book to justify his views on sexuality and wealth.
This approach to electoral politics should turn off most Americans. The Constitution firmly rejects any kind of religious test for office. Religion should not be at the center of our political discourse.
Mr. Santorum, you are not running for president of the Holy Name Society. You're running for President of the United States of America.
