Siku, the unbearably cute polar bear, has become a cyber-sensation. He was born on November 22 at the Scandinavian Wildlife Park in Denmark. He weighs only about 8 pounds and because his mother could not produce milk, he must be bottle-fed by three zookeepers until he is one year old. His name means "sea ice"---something no polar bear can live without. He will be the face of all endangered polar bears who number only about 25,000 in the wild Arctic.
One of his zookeepers in Kolind, Denmark, Vigh-Larsen, was interviewed on the Today Show this morning. Matt Lauer asked him if he had a wish for the New Year. While gently rubbing Siku, he replied: "Siku would like you all to reduce your carbon footprint and save energy. And if you do that, he would be very, very happy."
I wonder if Siku is getting through to Iowa, where Rick Perry says climate science is "unsettled", where Michele Bachman says global warming of the glaciers is a "hoax", where Rick Santorum calls climate change "junk science", where Mitt Romney says he'd drill for oil near Siku's relatives in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, and where Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul advocate getting rid of the Environmental Protection Agency.
Or are they too polarized to care?
