Hello there ChicagoNow world! I've been on blog hiatus for the last week because of Loyola's spring break. BUT NOW I'M BAAAAAACK!!!!!! And I'm ready to blog again!
Let's start this week off with our weekly behind-the-scenes feature. This week's featured campus media organization is the DePaulia, the award-winning campus newspaper at DePaul University.
The DePaulia is entirely student produced with a circulation of 4,000 copies each week. The DePaulia's print edition comes out every Monday, but also updates regularly online throughout the week.
The newspaper is divided into five editorial sections: news, features, sports, entertainment, and opinion/editorial. Besides university coverage, the newspaper's staff covers news from the Lincoln Park and South Loop communities.
The staff also won big at the 2012 Illinois College Press Association (ICPA) Awards last month; they won 11 awards and placed second in the "General Excellence" category for a Non-Daily Big School Newspaper.
According to Rachel Metea, editor-in-chief of the DePaulia, her favorite part about working at the paper is the opportunity to "play around and see what our readers like, and try to tailor a newspaper to that regard."
Writing and editing positions are open to all students. And students do not have to be journalism majors to work for the DePaulia. In fact, according to the DePaul College of Communication website, many of the last year's award-winning stories were produced by non-journalism majors.
To read the DePaulia, you can pick up a copy every Monday from either DePaul's Lincoln Park or Loop campuses or visit them online at www.depauliaonline.com.
P.S. Here's a special thanks and shout out to Rachel Metea who provided me with the information for this blog post, for sending me the staff picture and caption from the ICPA awards, and for giving me permission to pull the issue cover photos from the DePaulia Facebook page. Join me later on this week for my first profile of local student media adviser...and even later, later on, my first ever "Story of the Week" post!
