From the office of Rep. Joe Walsh (R, Illinois 8th District)…
WASHINGTON- Congressman Joe Walsh (IL-8) released the following statement in response to Senator Dick Durbin’s (IL-D) announcement that he is demanding that the Senate Judiciary Committee set up a hearing on the legality of placing “bounties” in professional football and other major sports.
Walsh stated: “It is shocking that Senator Durbin wants the Judiciary Committee to focus on professional sports and athletes worth millions of dollars while American families are still struggling to put food on the table. This is political grandstanding at its worst.
“How dare Senator Durbin and the Senate Democrats waste taxpayer money on this nonissue, when Senator Durbin has not demanded that Senate pass their own budget after 1,058 days of not doing so. Families in this country have to budget every day, but the Senate seems to think that it has a limitless taxpayer funded credit card to waste on the NFL.
“The fact that Senator Durbin wants to focus the Judiciary Committee’s efforts on policing the NFL is criminal, when the full Judiciary Committee has not held a single hearing examining the death of border patrol agent Brian Terry and Attorney General Eric Holder’s Operation Fast and Furious which was directly responsible for Agent Terry’s death.
“Senator Durbin, just a quick reminder: we are $15.6 trillion in debt, the cost of Obama’s Health Care plan has been doubled and is now projected to cost taxpayers $1.76 trillion, and the unemployment is still more than 8 percent after 3 years. Senator Durbin, it is time to get serious.”
